 Indian Culture has many symbols and rituals which explain many aspects and concepts of physical as well as spiritual life. Shiva is an exceptionally famous God in Indian Culture. He is considered to be the most powerful God in our scriptures. 

The pictorial representation explains a lot in our culture. One of the most common depictions of Lord Shiva is the Lingam (it is one of the symbols) which is in every temple of Shiva and is from lord shiva teachings
. It is a cylindrical pillar in the form of an egg generally made-up of marble, metal or clay, it could be from an inch to several feet in size and it could be in any color; black, brown or white. Generally, water and milk are offered to the shiva linga to show respect and affection for God.

But the question arises that why this specific symbol represents Lord Shiva? 

There must be a reason for it. The reason is not that complex; it is just about the representation of God. Let’s understand this, Shiva is the only God who is not having any physical dimension, he is considered to be infinite (formless) and that’s why no one can efficiently outline him. It is an extremely difficult task to depict someone who is infinite or formless. It is a very inconvenient job to do. So what’s the solution for it? A simple column of marble or metal will do the work. This is the simplest and easiest way to represent Lord Shiva and his power and masculinity. So this symbol iconography is about giving form to formless and we are trying to sketch or outline an extraordinary infinite power so that we can concentrate on a formless God easily. This sacred column of marble or stone which is called Shiv lingam represents Lord Shiva in a great manner. 

It is also believed that Shiva lingam also depicts the generative power of God or the union of Prakriti (nature) and Sanskriti (culture). The Union of culture and nature is referred to as shiv shakti in our scriptures.
  The sacred union of only nature and culture makes a beautiful society; this is one of the real causes behind the manifestation of our society. Just to have the remembrance of these aspects of life this symbolization takes place.

So next time when you face the shiva linga just keep in mind that you are in front of an infinite and formless power which has been shaped beautifully to represent the formlessness of God.
