Shivaratri: An auspicious night

In Indian Culture days and months are considered through the Lunar calendar (A calendar that is according to Moon rather than Sun). The lunar calendar is far more complex than the conventional calendar because the days and months are changing according to the moon.

Moon is a very important thing scientifically as well as spiritually. Tides, waves and other watery movements form due to the moon’s influence, Water disturbance on earth is due to gravity of the moon, don’t you think that nothing will happen in our body which is made up of 70% of water.

According to our tradition moon is related to our mind, mood and psychology of humans that is why we consider full moon night as the most romantic night of the month because, at that night, the moon has its power at peak (Strongest centrifugal force). Moon uplifts the human’s emotions dramatically. Moon has 16 fractions to which it increases and decreases throughout the month and Shivaratri is one of the things that proves the importance of the moon in our culture.

Shivaratri is an auspicious opportunity for humankind and also can be referred to as ‘The night of Shiva’.

Now the question is why Shivaratri (Night of Shiva) is so important?

Shivaratri comes every month on the 14th lunar day (Chaturdashi) which means a day before no moon day (Amavasya). On that day (Shivaratri) only one fraction of moon is left which would disappear on the next day (No moon day), so it the night with the moon of only one fraction out of sixteen fractions.

It is the only day on which the moon has the lowest power before no moon day after that day moon is going to increase till full moon day (Purnima). That means on the day of the Shivaratri moon has the lowest influence on the human mind. That implies on the night of Shivaratri humans can do whatever they want with full of concentration or with minimum influence of the moon on the mind.

Shivaratri is important because on that night humans can perform their tasks with full concentration. If you want to perform yogic (Spiritual)practice then this night is for you, if you are a scholar and want to study rigorously then this night is for you if you want to perform chanting then this night is for you. Whatever a person wants to perform Shivaratri is made for him, that night he can do whatever is important for him easily and efficiently.

Now the question arises that if it is so then why No- moon night (Amavasya) is not having such importance?

This is because on Amavasya night there is zero influence of the moon on human’s mind that can make things too serious. Doing work will be too boring because of the absence of the moon (that will make mood too serious which is not suitable to do things better)

A balance should be there in everything that is provided by Shivaratri, not by Amavasya.

So what is Mahashivaratri then?

Mahashivaratri is the most auspicious Shivaratri among all 12 or 13 Shivaratris of the year.

On this day the position of earth and moon is such that it can multiply the efforts made by humans. It is irrespective of kind of work is done, if you do good things it will multiply or if you do bad things it will multiply too.
Mahashivaratri is a Shivaratri which comes in the month of Phalguna (February/March) before the arrival of summer. It is also referred to as ‘The great night of Shiva’

Next time if you want to perform something important and special do it on the night of Shivaratri because geographical and spiritual causes will help you to complete your tasks efficiently.
